Ravenna is a special city that maintains
intact the indelible marks of two thousand years of history, in
which it played a protagonist role. Two thousand years in which
Ravenna was a capital city three times: of the western Roman Empire,
of the Goths of Theodoric and of the Byzantine Empire.
Because of this, Ravenna is at the same time a Roman, Goth and
Byzantine city, but also medieval, Venetian and, at the same time,
modern.
All this makes Ravenna one of the world's most suggestive cities,
thanks to a sublime concentration of monuments,
made even more precious by marble and extraordinary mosaics.
Eight of Ravenna's monuments have been declared "world heritage
sites" by the Unesco because of the supreme beauty of the mosaics
they contain: San Vitale, the Mausoleum
of Galla Placidia, the Neonian Baptistery,
Sant'Apollinare Nuovo and in Classe,
the Baptistery of the Arians, the Archbishop's
Chapel and the Mausoleum of Theodoric.
